Miniature Pair of Antique 19th Century French Louis XV Style Child Arm Chairs

Antique Furniture on ebay is selling a terrific pair of Miniature Louis XV Style Carved White Painted Child Arm Chairs for just over 1,300. The pair most likely originated from France in the late 19th Century.

The set has wonderful proportions built for a child to sit in a formal room, but with the same construction and attention to detail expected in a fine Louis chair of regular proportions. With a delicate carved crest featuring a bouquet of flowers flanked by multiple complicated borders of twisted rope and three beads and short reeding that wraps around the entire medallion back, the chairs are clearly carved by a talented craftsman. The woven rattan back is tight and in wonderful condition, matching the shabby chic milk white finish on the chairs. The arms flowing from the medallion back boast matching molding, terminating in scrolled hand holds over an arm rest formed with a subtle cyma-curve. A projecting frame rests over two cabriole legs that terminate in scrolled french toes. The rear legs are unadorned and backsweep slightly before terminating in plain french feet.

This is a unique set for any collector of French antiques looking for something visually interesting. This set is not only a practical pair for children to use, as they are very comfortable but they also serve well as decorative pieces.

A Louis XV Period Secretaire Lacquer With Ormolu Mounts

A Louis XV period secretaire a abattant, lacquer with ormolu mounts. Stamped F. RUBESTUCK et JME. $39,109.

The Devoted Classicist Blog featured some of the pictures of the furnishings from the Paris Apartment of Suzy and Pierre Delbee in the Christies Auction Catalogue.

A stand-out piece was a red lacquer secretaire signed by Francois Rubestuck dating to circa 1766. The decorative, fragile piece was not usable, however, because of the narrowness of the room (as noted in JANSEN) but placed there as a work of art.

Composer Maurice Ravel's French Styled Home

French musician Maurice Ravel will always be known for his beautiful music, but not many people knew about his incredible taste for furnishings. Ravel lived outside of Paris in the town Monfort l'Amaury. One glimpse of the home shows one side of the home credited to Maurice Ravel. Ravels Home is supposed to have written Le Tombeau de Couperin. By The Narrow Gate Blog shows more of the outside of his home, and a plaque in his honor. My French Country Home featured lovely pictures of the inside of his home which show striking color themes through out the home, and exquisite French Empire antiques. Ravel bought the home in 1921, and lived there until his death in 1937. Although he was famous for his music, it is obvious he had great taste in decorating and style.

Marie Claire Maison featured a neoclassical interior in the heart of Paris, twenty steps from the Seine back in their November 2007 issue. The home actually originally came with no bathroom or kitchen, but that didn't stop Dominique Kieffer. A year later Dominique was able to purchase an adjoining kitchen, which used another tenant, and then three years later, in the other wing of the building, she bought a small apartment, and was able to reconstruct the old apartment that was broken up over the years. Dominique chose the taupe, gray, and has kept the beautiful old oak parquet.

She tells Marie Claire Maison that "Sometimes I'm tempted to paint a room full of green raw. the English manner, or rather to mix black and yellow acid in a neoclassical style that I love very much, but I do not, I fear stancarmene soon." But I say - this room is not all black fashion? Dominique laughs. "Oh no. no. especially a home should not be trendy. That is my theater, my game. They say that black is aggressive. I do not feel so. Do not attack me. I thought to Leopard when I imagined that room, with Doric columns, the laurels in gold and especially the heavy damask curtains of cotton, as in the palaces of Sicily."

Black furniture has been one of the most popular furniture paint colors in history, and a close second is white. Today, no other color comes close to these two basic colors which always seem to be a public favorite.

No matter what the style is, black paint has been fashionable choice for French furniture,and also for primitive early American, regency and modern furniture. While the color of the furniture the same, the surrounds of these distinct styles are polar opposite requiring a different finish application.

Early American furniture is often shown with distressing around the edges. Wear and tear is found surrounding the feet of the furniture, and commonly in the areas around the handles, and corners of the cabinets or commodes. It is common to see undertones of a different shade of paint. Red, burnt orange are common colors seen under furniture pieces. When we think of French interiors, we think of pale blue, gray and white, yet French decorating isn't just one a one-color palette. Pink, salmon, and coral are often associated with the Rococo period and was in fashion until the end of the 18th century. Today we don't see many interiors based on these colors alone, and I ask myself why? Pastels are some of the most beautiful colors that a person can work with, and yet most of us gravitate towards the neutrals such as the gray and beige tones. I think for the most part, many of us are scared to use color, because we don't know how to incorporate color.

The Rococo developed in the early part of the 18th century in Paris, France as a reaction against the grandeur of Baroque where most of the pastel tones came into fashion. If you enjoy the bold shades of scarlet, cerulean, pacific blue, or shamrock green, consider working with the sibling colors such as seashell pink, peach, sea green, mint and sky blue as your main color shade in your home, while incorporating the bolder colors with accessories. The combination of pale blue and coral are great matches for one another.

Dodie Rosekran's Apartment In The Palazzo Brandolini

One of the very best examples of 18th Century designs which uses a coral and pink combination is the late Dodie Rosekrans apartment in the Palazzo Brandolini.

The ballroom of the Palazzo Brandolini was decorated by Tony Duquette and Hutton Wilkinson. The shades of gray and white were seen accented in the relief art and plaster ornaments. The walls are a shade of pink coral, and bold red coral pops against the pastel tones of pink on the walls. If you look closely the wall ornaments are shades of oyster gray and white, which is a perfect combination for the color tones of mango and copper.

The other example is the ceiling arches in the Royal Arcade in London. Brighter orange is paired with peach and gray ornaments. The look is amazing.

1. Orange is wonderful when it is paired with dandelion yellow, bone white and copper. Use brighter sunflower yellow with a muted pastel salmon. Muted pastels work nicely combined with electric vibrant colors.

9. Color-washing the walls is an excellent way to tone down a bright color on the walls. Light gray, or pastel yellow can produce a mottled effect against a bright tone on the walls. The faded, sun-bleached corals also look great on exterior patio walls with terracotta floor tiles and plant holders to give a Mediterranean look.

Jean-Francois Hache (January 10. 1730 - August 19. 1796) was a member of a famous dynasty of 18th century cabinetmakers that included his grandfather, Thomas, and his father, Pierre. The Hache family played a major role in France for over a century.

Jean-François Hache (1730-1796) is probably the most famous of the Hache craftsmen. In 1756 Jean-Francois made a four-month stay in Paris, where he was very much influenced by the Louis XV style and particularly by the work of Jean-François Oeben.

Jean-Francois was also known for his mosaic inlays, and bold and unusual geometric inlaid forms. Throughout the eighteenth century the workshops of the family Axe were recognized as the most talented craftsmen, cabinet makers in the region, working exclusively for larger families. Today, the pieces of furniture made by the Hache family are in high demand.

Step 1: Picking One Focal Piece For Each Room

If you are starting from scratch and don't know where to begin, consider focusing on buying one main piece for each room.

When putting together your rooms, the first thing you need to determine is the furnishings, because if you end up buying vintage, you may be needing to work around the colors of the upholstery to put together your room, so there is no sense picking out paint colors.

I know for myself, when I was just starting out, I had no idea how to upholster furniture. Over time I have learned more, and still make many mistakes. Though one thing is for sure, a sofa can be one of the hardest pieces of furniture to upholster even for a person who has upholstered for some time.

My suggestion, unless you are skilled at upholstery is to buy a vintage sofa that already has a nice color of upholstery that you can marry with your other furniture.

When you do purchase that sofa and get it home, consider getting it professionally cleaned to brighten the color.

Another way of improving vintage furniture with outdated upholstery is to spray it with upholstery paint. If there is a pattern with multiple colors, upholstery paint will make it all one shade, updating it with a few cans of paint.

I know for myself, when I purchased a few french pieces for my own home second hand, the upholstery was quite nice, but I wanted a deeper shade in the same tone. In addition, I wasn't too skilled making box cushions, so I turned to fabric spray paint as a quick update.

In this post I describe all the options that are available for fabric sprays on the market. I tried the Dupli-Color High Performance Vinyl & Fabric Spray in Desert Sand, and my French chairs turned out excellent.

A Couple Lessons I have Learned with Fabric Spray:

-After spray painting my own chairs, I learned that if you want to keep the fabric appearing soft, and not hard, I would suggest working with a color that is almost close to the color that you plan on spraying. My chairs were originally an ivory color, and the sand wasn't too far from the original tones of the fabric. I suppose you can use any color of paint with an ivory fabric, however spraying over black upholstery wouldn't work too well.

- Splurge on the extra can of paint. My two chairs took 2 cans of spray paint, but I would suggest getting an additional can because if you run out, I don't know if the colors will blend well when the fabric is dry afterwards. With my two Louis XVI chairs, I ran out of paint, just as I was finishing. Spray in the creases first then work your way into the middle. I assume that when the fabric is wet, the colors will blend better together. Ideally you want the paint to soak into the fabric, than to add another layer which may make it crispy.

- When you spray, SPRAY a bit farther away from your sofa or chairs. Unlike wood furniture which you can re-paint, and blend with sanding, you don't get a do- over on painted upholstery. It is better to loose some of the paint, and have an even finish than have a spotty paint job that looks like it has been sprayed. Spray back and forth in even movements to achieve a nice finish.

- I would avoid "Simply Spray" because many reviews suggest it malfunctions. I would recommend not purchasing that brand unless you are willing to multiple extra bottles. I know for myself, I purchased the bright apple green for a dress I wanted to dye a bright color, and the nozzle quit half way in between. I frantically rubbed the paint in the areas that didn't get sprayed. In the end, the dress was trashed, because of the product malfunctioning. The worst part of it, is I had enough paint to finish if only the bottle worked. It ALSO happened on several occasions (more than once with separate bottles) to one of my best friends. I would suggest sticking to Dupli-Color. I had no problems with it what so ever.

Dupli Color has the paint color white in their fabric spray line. This means if you end up getting a ivory sofa and want a punchy brand new looking white, you can easily spray the sofa down with Dupli Fabric spray in white and update it without spending a fortune on a complete upholstery job. Ivory is a common color with vintage sofas, so it makes for a very inexpensive option to getting that really high end look within a budget. Consider painting the frame in a gray with highlights of gold.

- The last thing I want to mention with using fabric sprays is plan ahead of what your overall finished look is going to be.

With a white sofa, you could leave the frame in it's natural wood finish, or you could give the frame a contrasting look with a gloss white.

You could also do a gray wash on the bare wood, which you would want to tape in advance. All three would be terrific choices combined with white upholstery.

If you are wanting to leave the wood as is, you will need to cover it with tape before you begin spraying. With my chairs, I used the Desert Sand which I combined with a gold frame. I sprayed both chairs, and didn't bother covering the frame. I left the chairs to dry for two days, and then I covered the upholstery around the frame with painters tape. I then painted on gold paint from American Accents. I let it dry, and later I can gold leaf some of the areas.

If I could suggest any gold paint, in the painted form, I would suggest American Accents. In a situation like this, where you want to be extremely careful, the American Accents brand actually comes in handy because the formula separates. When shaken, the mixture of gold, and oil creates a glossy gold finish. Unshaken, the gold sits at the bottom of the can, and is in a sort of thick form. The thick paint allows you to get the color on the frame for coverage with no spillage. Later you can add gold leaf, or paint the frame with the contents of the American Accents paint shaken.

- If you are looking for a modern edge, consider re-painting the frame in a darker color of the upholstery fabric. These chairs would look terrific with a gloss in a darker hue of the bright apple green. Even a lighter shade of green like mint in the same color tone would look fabulous.

Spending some extra money on your biggest furniture pieces in your home is a wise investment, because little accessories can be found everywhere. Larger pieces are harder to find.

If you are just starting out, and don't have a particular fabric that you are married to, consider purchasing a sofa that is neutral colored. We purchased in a solid color with no pattern. Today I no longer use the original pillows that came with the set as my taste has changed. Pillows are really easy to change out. Can you imagine buying another sofa, because the pattern has aged, or your style has evolved?

Today you can purchase a number of lovely French settees on Amazon. These reproductions are more available than ever. The down side is they are quite expensive. Most are priced at $2400 or more. Though if you are after a particular look, investing in a great piece is worth it.

Local classifieds have these sofas pop up every once in a while, but not too often. If you are not wanting to wait around, consider shopping on ebay. Most vintage French Sofas are marked around the $700-$900 range. Find a color that you can work with and consider painting the frame a darker hue of the same color, or gold.

Step 2: Paint Your Room A Classic French Style

Pastels play up the spectacular color palettes that were popular in the 18th century. Light blues, mint greens, shades of cornflower yellow are all interior colors that would work beautifully in a French styled home.

- Create classic molded walls with painted frames using painters tape.

-Pink and Mauve Combination for a classic French look.

-Lilac and Pink combination for a lighter feel.

-How about a Bright Rich Blue paired with darker hues of navy?

-You can see how lovely a mint green looks paired with shades of darker green.

-Pink looks lovely paired with lighter gray and white.

-Again several shades of blue are paired together to create a dramatic appearance.

-This photo shows a captivating effect as the upholstery and wall shade are in the same color tones.

-Go Dramatic with the walls, and consider very light tones of the same shade for your upholstery. In this room a light blue settee would look terrific.

-If moldings are out of your budget, consider painting rectangles on your wall which will give your home the same effect for less.

Chandeliers were commonly seen with crystals, and sconces on the wall in gold. Ornate rococo brass candles are very french looking as well as botanical prints lined on the walls. Colorful flower arrangements were coordinated with the interior color schemes and everything was accented with colorful bows. Consider grouping like objects such as candy tins, and perfume bottles in groups of 3, 5, or 7.

Factory finishes always cost less than custom requests. With un-finished flooring, the customer also has to add in the cost of the stain which can get expensive. Most customers who get un-finished flooring often choose to stain and finish the floor themselves.
