The late Alexander McQueen was among the favorites in the fashion industry and still holds that reputation today. The British designer was known for his exceptional heavy ornate styles that one could point back to historical french styled fashion. Queen brought forth a variety of interesting looks with varied textures and weights within each collection. While many appreciated his fairy tale imagination, his looks were new and innovative. He invoked the best of the past in his collections bringing forth ideas that evoked the renaissance, and century old designs for the modern day woman or man. I would imagine the time he spent at the theatrical costumiers Angels and Bermans was reflected in many of his collections. It was at Savile Row which his reputation grew and his talent for tailoring was noticed. Remembering McQueen's early runway collections, most were filled with a lot of shock and awe, including skulls and the dark life. The drama and extravagance developed his reputation for being a controversial designer. While many of his earlier collections were clothing the average person couldn't wear...(or afford) he set trends. He used textures and patterns to bring forth new innovation and a level of couture tailoring that was rarely seen today.
Some of McQueen's accomplishments included being one of the youngest designers to achieve the title "British Designer of the Year. He won British Designer of the Year in (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA's International Designer of the Year award in 2003.
McQueen's death was tragic and shocked the world when it was announced on the afternoon of 11 February 2010. He was found hanged that morning in his wardrobe with his favorite belt. Some speculate it was from his mothers death only days before. A significant level of cocaine, sleeping pills, and tranquilisers were found in his blood in an autopsy.
Sadly missed, he was among the best designers this world has seen in history. My favorite Collections were the Spring 2005, and the Spring 2010. Check out some of the designs with a french twist.
