One clue in the difference is that the wood is heavier in older Louis styles, or Napoleon chests. Take a look at the pictures in this post, the wood is much more chunky and it is solid wood through out. It is just a different design than the 1950's French dressers. There isn't a French dresser that isn't beautiful.  Many of the painted looks can be reproduced with a bit of paint and a dark glaze to give it that old antique feel.  (Read More.....)
