Bombe chests are some of the uniquest furniture because of its distinctive curvy features and round design which are not commonly found in other furniture styles. Bombe chests are one of the most elegant chests to own because they are one of the more complicated to make. I bought my chest a couple years ago, and finally completed painting it. It was finished orignially with baked on white paint, so needless to say stripping it was too labourous. I really am a big fan of burl wood, so knowing it wasn't burl wood, I decided to paint it. There are many variations of french dressers, than the often thought about french provincial styles. One clue in the difference is that the wood is heavier in older Louis styles, or Napoleon chests. Take a look at the pictures in this post, the wood is much more chunky and it is solid wood through out. It is just a different design than the 1950's French dressers.
